About this deal

The book is full of characters you will hate (a Bridezilla and a really crazy ex-cop are two examples) and hidden motives and hidden connections between characters - as you’d expect. That’s the opening of Chapter One, and I think this is a good place to insert a trigger warning or content warning for child abuse.

Yes, you'd enjoy this on its own merits but you'd be missing some critical subtleties that just makes the reading experience extraordinary. Her crass and unseemly behaviour make her the bridezilla of all bridezillas with her spitting contempt for the young woman who's passed away. The other descriptions I love are of the atmosphere, so will quote this bit as a nice example, rather than dwell on the vermin-infested, stench of the muddy slums. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his former comrade in arms, surgeon Paul Gibson, have seen more than their share of violent death in wartime. Always thought provoking, always managing to capture the historical atmosphere, yet sending a stinging rebuke to the present-day society in the process, and always, always, deeply compelling and absorbing!

One such establishment is owned by dwarf twin sisters, who cater for everyone – almost – they do draw the line and will blackball a client. It also crosses over between Sebastian’s campaign against evil men and Hero’s campaign for justice for women and children.I really enjoyed the book for the most part, although I missed Shona, she did not show that much in this one. Society ills, so many children on the streets, many whose parent had been transported, either to the colonies or Australia, leaving these young children to fend for themselves. There were two reasons that I considered giving a 4-star rating instead of a 5, but I just couldn't do it when push came to rate.
