About this deal

The book has three parts: (i) the way the world is, (ii) why the world is, and (iii) the inhabitants of the world. Updates include extensive rewriting of the chapter on time, enhanced clarity throughout the text, updated notes and suggested reading throughout. The author's work can serve either as a textbook in a university course on metaphysics or as an introduction to metaphysical thinking for the interested reader.

Personally, I disagreed with him more often than not, but that simply embroiled me in this text even more. Want to read a thick textbook and come out with no real answers and more questions than you started with? This book is an introduction to metaphysics and it presupposes no previous acquaintance with philosophy. Aunque esto no dice nada sobre si la Tierra es redonda o no, solo sabemos que la tierra es un objeto 3-dimensional pero mantiene en misterio su verdadera forma".Inwagen does a good job introducing the basics of this trippy field of thought, and you can impress your parents when you tell them you're studying metaphysics! This Fifth Edition differs from the Fourth in that the long, previously difficult chapter on time has been extensively rewritten, making it much more accessible and engaging for the student reader. He is the author of An Essay on Free Will (1983), Material Beings (1990), Being: A Study in Ontology (2022), and seven other books. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he is the author of numerous books, including Ontology, Identity, and Modality and Christian Faith and the Problem of Evil.

But now the book has given me the tools to talk more about it with my contemporaries and make more sense of it in arguments and readings in other subjects.

Although Van Inwagen does posit his own views, he spends more time picking at opposing arguments rather than supporting his own, but that is something very common in philosophy, so I guess it really isn't a criticism, per se.

On my first ready I'd say I had a about 50-70% overall comprehension even though I had 99% comprehension of the individual sentences. In this classic, exciting, and thoughtful text, Metaphysics , Peter van Inwagen examines three profound questions: What are the most general features of the world? On the other hand, the new editions "part III" on ontology is one of the best expositions of this metaphysical specialty (see also E. Aun si asumiéramos que nuestra percepción y cómo estas son dadas se sustentan sobre una realidad objetiva (cosa que, además, discute apenas hacia el final del libro), jamás establece la validez de algunas de las preguntas planteadas pasando por el más simple "¿por qué vemos/sentimos/pensamos así las cosas?

He has taught previously at Syracuse University and was the president of the Society of Christian Philosophers from 2010 to 2013. As for criticisms of the book, I am not persuaded that PVI fully dealt with Leibniz’s charge about a physical thing thinking. If you asked me what Metaphysics was I would say "the study of reality" and may make a few remarks on Ontology but nothing more. The new chapter presents a theory of the nature of being and proceeds to apply this theory to two problems of ontology: the problem of non-existent objects and the problem of universals. Peter van Inwagen is an American analytic philosopher and the John Cardinal O'Hara Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. This text is divided into three parts: The Way the World is, Why the World Is, and the Inhabitants of the World.
